こんばんは。セヴァン・スズキです。一年ぶりに日本に戻ってくることができて、そしてここでこうやってみなさんにお話できることを本当にうれしく思っています。今、皆さんがご覧になった92年のリオサミットでのスピーチは私にとっても強烈な映像で「よく12歳であのようなことをしでかす神経をもっていたなあ」と自分でも思います。
今回の来日にあたって、ナマケモノ倶楽部、学陽書房、そして今日のイベントの準備に携わってくれたたくさんのボランティアのみなさんに心から感謝申し上げます。素晴らしい個々人たちが集まって展開している「ＲＯＲキャンペーン」に参加することができて本当にうれしいです。
去年の11月、私は同じ会場にいました。ナマケモノ倶楽部やエコ・リーグの若いメンバーたちと一緒に日本中を講演して回り、多くの環境活動家たちに会いました。各地に素晴らしい活動やグループがあることがわかりました。この国に「変化を起こそう」とがんばっている人たちがいることを知って大変うれしく思いました。また、各地での前向きなフィードバックに元気づけられました。
この一年間で世界はどう変わったでしょう？アメリカ軍が「テロに対する先制攻撃」を正当化してイラクに侵攻しました。そして今現在も戦争状態が続いています。また、この一年の間に、私たち人類もまた地球という惑星に戦争をしかけ、その結果を目の当たりにしました。世界各地での異常気象はまた記録を塗り替えました。
ヨーロッパでは熱波が最高記録を更新し、フランスだけで少なくとも1万5000人の人が亡くなりました。私が住んでいる北米大陸西海岸でも過去最高の夏でした。そのために山火事が次々と発生し、今まで私たちが経験したことのないような災害に見舞われました。これまでに2000棟以上が焼失しました。また世界中で水不足による干ばつが起こっています。2002年度の自然災害による経済損失は530億ドル（６兆円）だったそうです。これは一昨年の200％増になります。そして今年、2003年は人類史上いちばん暑い夏だったのです。
このおかしな気候変動は、ここ数年、増加の一途をたどっています。科学者はこれらを「気候変動」と分析します。しかし、これらの気候の変化を知るのに私たちは環境の専門家である必要はまったくありません。新聞を開けばすぐに、私たちはこれらの変化を実感することができるのです。
私たちはグローバル化された世界に暮らしています。日本に来る前の３週間、私は北米大陸を講演して回っていました。そして、まったく異なった文化をもつ日本に来ることを楽しみにしていたわけです。しかし、私が新宿のホテルから目にしたものは、スターバックス、マイクロソフト、エディ・バウアー、キンコーズ、フェデックス等の看板でした！これらの会社はみな私が住んでいる北アメリカからやってきたものです。
ブランドや多国籍企業はグローバリゼーションの証です。しかし、グローバリゼーションには会社の名前以上の意味があります。私たちが地球の資源も同時に分かちあっているということす。ですから、私たちは地球上で起きている問題もみんなで分かちあう必要があります。たとえば、空気や水といった資源には国境はありません。日本と私が住んでいるカナダのブリティッシュ・コロンビア州はとても深くつながっています。私たちは同じ太平洋をわかちあっています。そしてブリティッシュ・コロンビア州から、たくさんの魚や木材が日本に向けて輸出されています。気候変動によるカナダでの漁業や林業への打撃は、もはや私たちだけの問題ではありません。日本の皆さんの問題でもあります。私たちはみんな相互に依存したつながりの中で生きているのです！
「環境」という言葉が意味するものは何でしょう？多くの人はこの単語から、アマゾンの熱帯雨林とかどこかの海にいる絶滅危惧種とか、今そこにないもの、どこか遠くにあるものを連想します。私たちが呼吸するもの、私たちが口にするもの、私たちが捨てるもの、それらのすべてが「環境」なのだと考える人はほとんどいません。環境とは、わかりやすくいえば、私たちを取り巻くものすべて、私たちが存在する空間すべてです。
92年の地球サミット以降、私は世界各地に呼ばれて、私たちの日々の消費と自然環境とのつながり、相関性について話をしてきました。都市に住む私たちは自然との関係が希薄になってきています。そのツケが生活の様々な場面で影響を及ぼしています。
環境問題とは「人間問題」です。近年ますます、公害や汚染が健康問題に直結してきています。カナダ政府は昨年、一年間に1万6000人のカナダ人が大気汚染による呼吸疾患によって死亡していると発表しました。さらに喘息の子どもがどんどん増えています。父の子ども時代には、誰も「喘息」という病名を知らなかったと話してくれたことがあります。それくらい稀な病気だったのです。でも私の時代には、必ずクラスに1人は喘息児がいました。カナダだけでなく日本でも同じような問題が起こっています。日本には喘息児が700万人以上いると聞きました。
環境問題はさらに経済問題でもあります。地球上の天然資源は減少の一途をたどっています。そして私たちの仕事が失われていきます。私の住んでいるブリティッシュ・コロンビア州では、魚や森といった資源は永遠ではありません。ですから私たちの重要な産業が大きな問題に直面しているわけです。もしよろしければ、知り合いの保険会社の方に気候変動がもたらす経済的ダメージについて聞いてみてください。
今晩、サイクリング、チャンス・ポノポノ、ボディアンドソウルといった社会的公正のために活動しているグループとご一緒できることを本当にうれしく思います。なぜなら、もっとも重要なことですが、環境問題は平和そして安全保障問題にも直結しているからです。私たちが口にするものすべて、消費するものすべては地球でつくられたものです。私たちは、自分たちが生きるのに必要な資源のすべてを環境に依存しているわけです。
戦争は、しばしば地球上の資源の不公平な配分によって引き起こされます。私たちが地球上の資源をどんどん消費し、一握りの人々が自給自足の生活からますます離れるにつれ、この資源の配分が不公平の一途をたどっていきます。貧富の差がますます拡大していきます。これは平和な状態からどんどん遠ざかっていることを意味します。
戦争が自然資源をめぐって行われていることを私たちは知っています。多くの人がイラクでの戦争は、先進諸国の石油依存が火を注いだ資源戦争であると議論します。なぜなら石油を制するものは世界を制するからです！また、21世紀には水が政治的な問題として取り上げられるだろうとも論じられています。もし私たちが平和を望むならば、世界の水危機にもっと目を向けなければいけません。水は、私たちのいのちを支えるもっとも基本的な要素の一つです。にもかかわらず、世界中にはきれいな水を手に入れることができない人々がたくさんいます。このことは、今年3月に日本で開かれた「世界水フォーラム」でも強調されました。
「難民」は戦争がもたらした産物です。今日では、戦争だけではなく、環境問題によってもますます多くの人々が難民生活を余儀なくされています。気象学者の中には、地球温暖化によって今後80年間で海面が1メートル上昇するだろうと予告している人がいます。海面が1メートル上昇すると、10億の人々がホームレスになるそうです。この人たちはいったいどこにいけばいいんでしょう？彼らは「自分たちが家を失ったのは先進国の人たちのせいだ」と怒りはしないでしょうか？地球温暖化はまさしく戦争やテロリズムの原因となってきています。温暖化を止めることができなければ、私たちはますます戦争を回避することができなくなるでしょう。
私たちは最近「テロリズム」という言葉を頻繁に耳にしますが、テロが起こる原因を見定める必要があります。アメリカ合衆国は世界でいちばん富める国です。そしてアメリカは世界中の資源を搾取し続けています。最近アメリカの人たちはテロに対する恐怖の中で暮らしています。しかし、その因果関係はアメリカ自身が作り出したものです。
あるアフリカの首長（チーフ）が西側から訪ねてきた外交官に対してこう言ったそうです。「もし、あなた方があなた方の富を私たちと分かち合おうとしないならば、私たちは私たちの貧しさをあなた方と分かち合いたいと思います。」貧困、絶望、不正義といったものがテロの温床となっているわけです。
このような問題すべてに私たち若い世代は対処していかなくてはなりません。私たちの子ども、彼らの子どもたちもまた、これらの問題と向き合っていかなければなりません。私たちが自然界に対して行っている戦争は、実は未来世代に対する戦争といっても過言ではありません。
リオの地球サミットから11年が経ち、私は23歳になりました。そして私は現在も環境について、そして私たち自身の未来について各地で話をしています。1997年のリオ+5、そして2002年にヨハネスブルグで行われたリオ+10にも私は参加しました。この10年間で私が悟ったことは、もはや国のトップである政治家たちに問題解決を期待することはできないということです。私たちは政治家たちが問題を解決するまで息を止めていることなんてできません。それに待っていても問題は解決されないのです。
ですから私は自分のフォーカスを少しシフトしました。本当の変革は、個人、つまり私たち一人ひとりからこそ沸き起こるのだと確信したのです。本当の変革は個人が集まったグループによってもたらされます。変化とは、私たちが自身の行動に責任をもつことからはじまるのです。
私は世界で起こっている不正義をサポートしたくはありません。未来の戦争に火を注ぐようなことをしたくはありません！今、世界中で起きていることに対し、外野席でその成り行きを見ているだけでは充分ではありません。もしあなたがこのような不正義に貢献したくないのなら、あなた自身が正義のために立ち上がらなくてはなりません。
私たちの世代がなすべきことはたくさんあります。まず世界を取り巻く様々な問題に対して発言をしていくこと。私たちの文化の価値を再検証すること。そして毎日の暮らしやビジネスを支えている倫理を問い直すこと。本当に大切なものは何か、自分に問いかけてみてください。きっと破壊的ではない生き方への手がかりがあるはずです。
これがまさに私が関わっているNGOスカイフィッシュプロジェクトと日本のナマケモノ倶楽部がやろうとしていることです。私たちは自分たちが信じていることと相反するような生きかたをしたくはありません。これはナマケモノ倶楽部が提唱する「スロービジネス」のコンセプトにも通じます。
私たちは「RORキャンペーン2003」に共同で取り組むことにしました。「ROR」とは、不正義や破壊的でない文化を基盤としたライフスタイルを選び取るという誓いです。将来の戦争に貢献するようなライフスタイルに対し、きっぱり「NO」と意思表示をすることです。また、私たちが日々お金を使って投票していることに責任を持つことでもあります。私たちが何かを買うとき、それは単に商品をお金と交換しているだけではなく、商品を作った政治的・経済的なシステムをサポートしていることになります。「ROR」では、地球も人間にも害を及ぼさないビジネス、スロービジネスを応援しています。
昨年「ＲＯＲ」プロジェクトを立ち上げてより、私はアメリカ、カナダ、南アフリカ、日本でこの概念を紹介してきました。「ROR」への反応はとても勇気づけられるものばかりでした。すでに何千もの署名が集まっています。今日ここにお集まりのみなさんにも、「ROR」に賛同していただけるようでしたら、ぜひ宣誓の署名をしていただければと思います。オンラインでも今日ここで紙にサインすることもできます。
私たち先進国の人間は、私たち自身が出す害悪に対してより大きな責任があります。たとえばヨーロッパと日本、北アメリカの人口の合計は、世界の人口の15％にしか満たないのに、大気中の二酸化炭素の70％を排出しています。その二酸化炭素は温室効果ガスとして地球温暖化につながる気候変動を引き起こしています。
私たちの世代は世界のほかの国々に対し、私たちの両親の世代がそうであったように、地球とそこに住む人々を破壊し続けないことを証明しなくてはなりません。そして、私たちは行動をもってそれを証明しなくてはなりません。私たちはビジネスという手段をもってそれを証明しなくてはなりません。
若者として、そして環境に意識をもつ市民としての私たちの課題を３つ挙げます。
1)現代の私たちの暮らし方が私たちの未来をも奪っているのだという事実に気づくこと。
2)私たち自身が持続可能な暮らし方をすること！この「持続可能」という言葉は私の両親の世代に発明され、私たちはこの言葉と共に育ってきました。今こそ、「持続可能」を実行に移すときです。
3)いのちを尊重し、人生をたのしむこと！この不思議にみちた素晴らしい世界に感謝し、それを讃えなくてはなりません。この美しい世界を守るために私たちが闘いたいのだということを思いださなくてはいけません。そしてよりよい生きかたを探して互いに助け合わなくてはなりません。これはとてもワクワクする過程です。
ときに問題はあなたを圧倒してしまうかもしれません。確かに環境問題はとても大きい。私自身、「どうやってこれらの膨大な問題に私が変化を起こすことができるんだろう？」と感じることもあります。そんなとき、私は、これまで私が出会った素晴らしい人たちに想いをはせます。私に元気と勇気を与えくれた人たち。それぞれのコミュニティで行動している人たち。様々な問題に一生懸命に取り組んでいる人たち。彼らのおかげで、私たちは今日もこの地球に住むことができるのです。たとえば私は若い女性ですが、女性の権利のためにこれまで闘ってきた人たちに想いをはせることがあります。すると、私たち一人ひとりが人を勇気づけ、そして影響を与えるパワーを持っているということに気がつくのです。
私たちの行動は、自分の子どもたち、家族、友達、地域の人々に影響を与えることができます。ここにいるみなさん一人ひとりが互いに影響を与えることだってできます。つまり、私たち一人ひとりの生き様がよい方向にも悪い方向にも影響を与えていて、最終的には未来に影響を与えているのです。それが私たち一人ひとりのもつパワーです！
私は一年たって日本に戻ってきました。そしてナマケモノ倶楽部がより大きく力強く成長しているのを見て、大変ワクワクしています。日本に来る前、北米各地を３週間旅していましたが、そこでも環境問題に意識を持つ人たちが増えていることを実感しました。自分の信じることに対して立ち上がる勇気を持つ人たちがどんどん増えています。
日本にも行動する勇気を与えてくれる人がたくさんいます。私たちのモデルになりうる人や先生がたくさんいます。あなたが信じることを友達に話すことからはじめてみてください。あなたが信じるもののために立ち上がるには何が必要なのかを探してみてください。この議論をはじめればすぐに私たちのモデルになりうる人や先生を見つけることができるでしょう。なぜなら、あなたが自分の信念に沿った行動をとるとき、あなたは影響力をもった存在となるからです。信念は人を強くします。そして一人ひとりが強い影響力をもつ存在となったとき、私たちのコミュニティ、私たちの未来もまた力強いものとなります。
今夜ここにお招きいただいたこと、そして自分の信じることに対して行動を起こしている若いリーダーたちと時間を共有できることを光栄に思います。ありがとうございました。

INTRO:
I’m so glad to be back in here in Japan…
it’s great to be back as the guest of the Sloth Club and Gakuyo
Shobo, and all the volunteers who have put on this event.
It’s inspiring to be part of a movement of so many wonderful
individuals.
I was here last November, I toured across
the country with the Sloth Club and Eco-League and visited
many other activists… I was so amazed by all the activisim
and organization in Japan. I was amazed by the positive feedback
we received.
I was here in Japan exactly one year ago.
Over the last year, we watched as the US invaded Iraq in a
“pre-emptive strike against terrorism”, and still watch today
as the war continues.
Over the last year we also witnessed the
consequences of our continued human war on this planet?as
the world’s weather events yet again broke records:
The Heat Wave in Europe was the hottest on record, and left
15 000 dead in France alone. In BC and California we experienced
the hottest summer, and the forest fires this season were
the worst we’d ever experienced, over 2000 homes were lost.
In 2002 the economic loss from weather disasters alone was
$53 billion dollars, almost two times the year before. And
this year, 2003 is expected to be the hottest year on record.
The bizarre fluctuations in weather that
have been increasing for the last few years match exactly
with scientists’ description of Climate Change.
You don’t have to be an old timer or an environmentalist to
be aware of the changes in our atmosphere, you just have to
open the newspaper.
We live in a globalized world. I’ve been
traveling around North America for the last three weeks, and
was looking forward to visiting Japan for a completely different
culture. But when we got to our hotel in Shinjuku I could
see Starbucks, Microsoft, Eddie Bauer, Kinko’s, Fedex. Brands
and companies are the signs of globalization, but there’s
more to it? we also share our globe’s resources, and global
problems. Japan and Canada are very connected: we share the
Pacific Ocean and BC exports much of our fish and timber to
Japan. Our fisheries and forestry crisis is not just our problem,
it’s your problem too! We are connected.
What does the word “Environment” mean?
I think when a lot of people think of this word, they think
of something out there, something that doesn’t relate to them
in their everday lives in the city. We don’t think of it as
what we breathe, what we eat, what we throw away. Our environment
is all around us; it is where we exist.
For years now, I have been talking about our use and connection
with our environment, because the consequences of our disconnect
are spreading into all aspects of our life.
More and more, pollution is a health issue. Last year the
government of Canada said that 16 000 Canadians die each year
due to air pollution.
And more and more children now have asthma (my dad says when
he was a kid, no one knew what asthma was because it was so
rare). I know this is a problem in Japan as well as Canada,
there are over 7 million asthmatics in Japan.
Environmental issues are more and more economic issues-- our
primary resources are declining, and our jobs are suffering.
Like I said, in BC, our fish and our forests are not going
to last forever, so our major industries are in big trouble.
And just ask anyone working in the insurance industry about
the economic damage of Climate Change.
And I am so glad to be here in solidarity with CycleLink,
Body and Soul and Chance Ponopono, because most importantly,
environment issues come down to PEACE and security issues.
Everything that we eat, everything that we consume, comes
from the Earth.
We depend on our environment for all of the resources we need
to stay alive.
War is often caused by unbalanced distribution of resources.
As we use up our global resources, and as fewer and fewer
people are self-sufficient, the injustices of resource distribution
only increases:
and the gap between rich and poor grows. And this means less
and less peace.
We know about wars over natural resources ? many would argue
that the war in Iraq is about resources, fuelled by the Developed
world’s dependence on oil ? whoever controls oil controls
the world!
And I have heard many people say that Water is going to be
the political issue of the 21st century; I think if we want
peace, we have to address the growing water crisis in the
world. Water is a fundamental element of life which many lack
clean access to; this was addressed at the World Water Forum
here in Japan in March.
Refugees are one of the products of War;
but they are more and more becoming a product of environmental
crises. Climatologists project that over the next 80 years,
global warming will cause sea levels will rise 1 meter, leaving
1 billion people homeless. Where will these refugees go? Will
they not be angry that this was caused by people in the Developed
world? Climate change is a growing source for conflict and
terrorism, and war is inevitable if Climate Change is not
stopped.
We hear a lot about the word “terrorism”
and we need to examine its causes. The US is the richest country
in the world. It is also exploiting much of the world’s resources.
These days United States lives in fear of terrorism. The connection
has to be made.
An African Chief said to a visiting diplomat
from the West: “If you do not share your wealth with us, we
will share our poverty with you.” And it is poverty, desperation
and injustice that fuels terrorism.
All these issues are problems that our
generation will have to address. All these issues are problems
that our children, and their children, will be forced to confront.
Our war on our natural world is really a war on our own future
generations.
It’s been 11 years since Rio. Since then I have realized that
it’s not a matter of convincing our top politicians to find
the solutions to our problems. We can’t hold our breaths waiting,
it’s not going to happen. Real change comes from individuals,
it comes from groups of individuals. Real change is up to
US.
I don’t want to support these injustices, and fuel future
wars!
Today, it is not good enough to stand by, and watch it happen
-- if you don’t want to contribute to these injustices, you
have to take a stand for justice. The challenge for today’s
generation is to talk about these issues, and to re-examine
the values of our culture and the ethics on which our daily
life and businesses are built upon. We have to ask what is
really important?
And then we have to learn to live in a way that is NOT destructive.
This is what we at the Skyfish Project and the Sloth Club
is trying to do.
We want to live in a way that doesn’t contradict what we believe
in.
This is what Slow Business is about.
This is why we have joined forces to work on the ROR campaign.
This pledge is about choosing a lifestyle that won’t support
a culture of destruction and injustice, living a lifestyle
that refuses to contribute to the basis for a future war.
It’s about taking responsibility for the fact that we vote
with our dollars… it’s about supporting business that doesn’t
do harm: Slow business.
Since last year, the response to our ROR has been amazing.
We’ve gotten thousands of signatures.

We as members of Developed countries have
a big responsibility because we are responsible for a lot
of harm: for example Europe, Japan and North America consist
of only 15% of the world’s population, but yet we have created
70% of the CO2 in the atmosphere, and CO2 is the major greenhouse
gas contributing to Climate Change.
Our generation has to prove to the rest
of the world that we aren’t going to continue to destroy the
Earth and its people the way our parents have.
And we have to prove it with our actions.
We have to prove it with the way that we do business.
Our job, as young people, as people who
are aware, is to:
1) Raise awareness and bring attention to the fact that the
way that many are currently living is taking away directly
from the future.
2) Live sustainably! This concept was only invented in our
parent's lifetime, but we’ve grown up with this word. We have
to live it.
3) We have to honour and enjoy life!! we have to celebrate
and appreciate how amazing our world is, and support each
other in seeking a better way of living. It’s exciting!
Sometimes the problems are so overwhelming.
So huge. Sometimes I think,
“how can I possibly make a dent in these enormous issues?
What can I do?”
But then I remember all the amazing individuals who have inspired
and humbled me, all the people that I have met who are working
so hard on so many diverse issues. Then I remember that EACH
of us has the power to inspire and influence. Each of us influences
not only the children in our lives, but we influence our family,
our friends, the people we interact with in our communities.
And we will, for good or for bad, ultimately influence the
future.
I have come back to Japan, and see the
Sloth Club strong and growing, and it fills me with excitement.
I have been traveling across North America for the last three
weeks, and I feel that more and more people are becoming aware,
more and more people are feeling empowered to stand up for
what they believe in.
And there are many inspiring people here in Japan. There are
many mentors and teachers. So talk with your friends about
what you believe in. So find out what you need to do to stand
up for what you believe. Because when you act in line with
your beliefs, then your become powerful. You are so strong.
And when individuals are strong, our community, our future
is strong.
It’s an honour to be here this evening, and to share the stage
with young leaders who are acting on what they believe.
